Rich with history, the Lovell Old Home Days observance continues in 2006 with some old traditions and new ideas. The annual summer event began in 1954, drawing a crowd of 3,500 that first year. A colorful parade, horse pulling, a locally operated midway and a supper at the Masonic Hall were the highlights of the all day event. 1976 saw a fantastic bicentennial celebration and parade, one of the last Old Home Days events for a period of about 15 years. Then, in 1996 Old Home Days was revived by a dedicated group of locals who wished to bring the community together and share in the summertime festivities once enjoyed by families and friends of Lovell.
Today, the Lovell Old Home Days committee meets year round to plan events that will thrill young and old alike on the fourth weekend in July. The parade down Main Street is still a major draw, but folks from near and far enjoy such favorites as Live Entertainment, Cow Chip Festival, Children's Field Games, Skillet Throw and Dunk Tank, not to mention the delicious food. Thanks to some inspired individuals, the 1st annual 5K Road Race and Lollipop Youth Run were both quite successful in 2005, as was the Farmer's Market and Craft Fair. The 2006 event will see the return of a children's parade to be held on Friday night preceding the perennial favorite Kezar Trailbreakers' Pig/Turkey Roast at the athletic field. As tradition would have it, the weekend will draw to a close with a Dance under the stars on Saturday night.
Though some of the festivities have changed over the years, memories of Old Home Days abound. And certainly, what binds the events of yesteryear and today is the work involved in pulling it all together. Summed up by Maynard Craig many years ago, "When there's a need to pitch in together and work hard, the people do."
